Centering Women in Fiction: Removing Your Unconscious Bias

Ursula Le Guin has said that she made mistakes with the way she handled women in Wizard of Earthsea. She attributes this to having grown up reading fiction that was written by men, for men. It took her years to deprogram herself so that she was able to write fiction for women. Likewise, romance has the biggest market share of any form of fiction, and yet is often dismissed, even by its most ardent fans. What are the ways in which we internalize biases and how can we combat them?
